Mary-Anne Flanagan
Born 1970 in Cape Town, South Africa
Currently lives and works between the West Coast and Overberg Regions, S.A
Mary-Anne Flanagan is a South African visual artist whose work is rooted in the landscapes of the Western Cape, particularly the West Coast and Overberg.
After a long executive career, she became a full-time artist in 2024. Her training has included courses in life drawing, printmaking and fine art at Ruth Prowse School of Art, as well as further study with artist Diana Page. She maintains an ongoing studio practice at Studio 46 in Blouberg, working with artist Louise van Rhyn.
Working primarily in acrylic and mixed media, Mary-Anne uses expressive colour, texture and mark-making to explore landscape, flora, wildlife and the everyday visual encounters that create a sense of place and belonging. Her work often begins with familiar South African subjects, transformed through heightened colour and a playful contemporary sensibility.
She exhibits regularly with the Hangklip Art Collective at Harold Porter National Botanical Garden and is also one of the Hermanus Quay Artists, exhibiting with the group during selected holiday periods.
About Melkbos Ateljee
Welcome to Melkbos Ateljee, a warm and joyful collective of art lovers in the charming coastal town of Melkbosstrand, just a short distance from Cape Town, South Africa.
Our heartfelt mission is to celebrate and support both emerging and established local artists, nurture meaningful collaborations with local businesses, and gently inspire the next generation of creative talent through vibrant, community-led initiatives.
This year we are especially excited to introduce our very first Melkbosstrand ART/FILM Festival. Throughout the week, you can enjoy film screenings from around the world, a relaxed Poetry Corner, hands-on art workshops, and a special performance by Karen Zoid (Zoid Spawn) featuring the Melkbosstrand High School Choir and much more. The festival culminates in our much-loved final weekend of OPEN STUDIOS.
Through art and culture, we hope to strengthen our close-knit community, bring people together, and help make Melkbosstrand an even more beautiful place to call home.
We would love you to join us on this shared journey of creating, connecting, and celebrating.
