'18 What is your belief?

'18.2 Narratives about the Sacred'

The fascination with rituals and other holistic practices is part of an attempt at spiritual elevation and sacralization of a daily life. The search for the sacred occupies the cultural and social imaginary.

The ESCAP3 Gallery in South Africa opened an exhibition in 2021 that started from Albert Einstein's theories to understand what conceptions we give to the "sacred".

In Brazil, the Sunshine Queens festival (2019) presented works, performances and dance shows that celebrated Mother Earth, alchemy, witchcraft and other various manifestations of the sacred. Kemetic Yoga is a practice inspired by African ancestry, created by Yirser Ra Hotep, with classes in several countries, including Brazil.

The fall of "gurus" who centralize spirituality, as in the prison of the medium John of God, overturn the idea of "farewelling" of these figures, showing that the search for spiritualization is an individual process. The thinker Betty Bethards has taught, since the 1970s, that we must explore our own spiritual paths, as in the book "Be Your Own Guru" (1988).

The American artist Theaster Gates created the new serpentine galleries pavilion (London, 2022), entitled "Black Chapel", with the aim of being a space for deep personal reflection. In Chile, the Bahá'í temple was built to house any belief and faith, as well as the chapel of the Herzog & de Meuron studio, designed on a road in Switzerland in 2020.

Also related to spirituality, the word "holistic" designates the understanding of a phenomenon in its entirety. Therefore, contemporary holistic practices integrate mind, body and spirit. Recent research by Global Wellness Institute indicates that the wellness market in Latin America moves about US$ 235.4 billion. The Institute also launched the "Wellness Evidence" platform, mapping scientific and effective evidence of so-called "alternative" therapies, such as chromotherapy, meditation, yoga, among others.

The search for the sacred, well-being and transcendence opens new explorations to the meaning we give to our daily life, and may culminate in an expansion of consciousness.
