Moonshadow
"Inspired by dark nights during loadshedding, I am excited to launch a new series of prints titled 'Moonshadow'. These works have evolved from monotype prints that have been reworked through collage into original artworks on washi paper. The title hails from the popular song of the same name by Yusuf Islam, a.k.a. Cat Stevens. The lyrics of the song balance tragedy with a sense of peace achieved by acceptance.
For me, a moonshadow is but a passing period of darkness that can create a greater appreciate for the return of the ‘faithful light.’ I was particularly struck by satellite footage of moonshadow across the earth: when the moon comes between the earth and the sun, creating a shadow or darkness for onlookers. The glimmering orb of sunlight, slipping along the edges of the dark moon is quite beautiful and also fleeting. New Moon, as it is called, signals the beginning of a new lunar cycle so rather than a darkness to signal ending it is a pregnant darkness full of beginning. Something to ponder during our Eskom imposed candlelight dinners."
