Group Exhibition: Between a rock and a hard place

ESCAP3 Gallery & Melkbos Ateljee 2024

49 Mostert Road, Melkbosstrand 7441, Cape Town, South Africa

Saturday 21 September & Sunday 22 September 2024, 09:00 - 17:00 (SAST)

Viewing throughout August & September 2024 strictly by appointment only.

Participating Artists: Bernard Brand, Annemi Conradie-Chetty, Eric Frank, Oscar Henning, Daniël Hugo, Liefie AKA Haidee Nel, Natasha Norman (South Africa) & Madiha Sebbani (Morocco).

Through various mediums, this exhibition traverses the delicate space that exists between the seen and unseen, the ephemeral and the corporeal, revealing a complex dynamic of impermanence and existentialism. As we navigate our interconnected relationship to the landscape, both past and present, the future and the imaginary.

The selected artworks may be interpreted as a collective expression of belonging, observation, introspection and visual storytelling, thus becoming traces of a will to create, recreate and communicate. The phrases: between a rock and a hard place; or between the devil and the deep blue sea, encapsulates here that the Artists’ are indeed compelled, rather than to a decisive choice they’ve made.

Caught in between our ancestral Mother Earth and Father Sky, what other spaces do we explore in an attempt to reconcile with the unknown, the environment, our own existence and place.

Building a Masterpiece Collective

Melkbos Ateljee represents a group of local art enthusiasts whose mission it is to promote local artists, engage with local businesses, and support the next generation of Melkbosstrand artists by presenting an annual OPEN STUDIOS event.

An open studios event is an event in which artists and artisans open their studios to the public. Many of the participating artists allow the public to access their studios which are normally their own private workspace. An open studio event can offer an unusual insight into these spaces and how artists work. Some artists and artisans open their studios, while others display their work in communal venues all across the town. At these locations, you may get the chance to interact with the artists and artisans, learn more about their work, purchase artwork, or just get inspired.

The Exhibition is now live for your convenience on the Viewing Room Tab here.
